The Friends of the Silver Saddle Ranch (FOSSR) is a 501(c)(3)
organization dedicated to the preservation of the Silver Saddle Ranch.
We are a diverse, community based group dedicated to the preservation of the Silver Saddle Ranch and its cultural, historical, and natural resources as both public open space and a working ranch.
FOSSR was incorporated in July, 2001.
Board of Directors:
President: NANCY SANTOS
Nancy Santos is a professional biologist and NEPA specialist with a B.S. from the University of California, Davis. She has served as the Vice President and President of Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch since it’s inception in 2000. Ms Santos has developed a bird checklist for Silver Saddle Ranch, served as program coordinator for Eagle Scout projects, and led the FOSSR Board in organizational planning and development of the FOSSR mission statement. Ms Santos was project manager for the Creating a Community Vision: Silver Saddle Ranch and the Carson River project (2006-2008) which became the basis for management planning for the Silver Saddle Ranch and adjoining public lands along the Carson River.
Vice-President: BETH SCOTT
Beth Scott has a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and has worked throughout the western states in the public and private sector as a landscape architect, landscape contractor, resource planner, and project manager. She has designed many resource reclamation and parks and recreation projects constructed in Nevada, California, and Arizona. Beth wrote the program analysis which placed the reconstruction of the Carson City Aquatic Center as the top funding project for Question 18 funds. Now retired, Beth is an award winning, published poet. She and her husband, Bruce, enjoy competing in Combined Driving Event competitions.
Treasurer: KATHY SILVIA
Kathy Sylvia moved to Carson City from Rhode Island 8 years ago. She attended the University of Minnesota and has over 20 years experience in the accounting field, including many years as bookkeeper for the non-profit Newport Art Museum. She currently is a Water Rights Specialist for a local engineering firm. Her interests include most outdoor activities, with a special fondness for white-water and recreational canoeing, pleasure and competitive sailing, hiking, and horseback riding. Kathy and her husband, Dave, enjoy travel and herding dog competitions. Her enthusiasm and experience are great assets for FOSSR.
Secretary: MICHAEL BISH
Michael Bish moved to Carson City in 1993. He has been a member of Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch since its inception and has served as a Trustee and most recently as the Secretary for the organization. Michael works for the Nevada Department of transportation as its Software License Manager. Michael enjoys many outdoor activities, especially traveling and bike riding.
Trustee: DESNA YOUNG
Desna Young is a retired Bureau of Land Management Environmental Coordinator, Outdoor Recreation Planner and Archaeologist. She received her B.S in Fitness Management from the University of Nevada, Reno. Desna has volunteered building pedestrian and equestrian trails and writing successful recreation grants for Truckee Meadows Trails Association, Carson Valley Trails Association, and the Tahoe Rim Trail. She also assisted in the design of the 1000 mile long Great Baikal Trail around Lake Baikal in Siberia She has a broad background in community planning along the Eastern Sierra’s. Desna and her husband live in Virginia City and enjoy hiking, rock climbing, long distance running, and endurance horseback riding. You may frequently find her riding her horses and enjoying the trails at the SSR.
Trustee: MIKE DREWS
Michael Drews graduated from the University of San Francisco with a degree in sociology/anthropology. He has worked as an archeologist in both the public and private sector in Nevada. Currently he is a Cultural Resource and GIS project manager for Gnomon, Inc. in Carson City. Appointed to the Carson City Historic Resources Commission by the Carson City Board of Supervisors in 1989, he has served as its chairman since 2003. As member of the Carson River Advisory Committee in 1994 representing historic and Native American Interests, he co-authored the river’s first comprehensive master plan. He was appointed as a Member-at-Large to the Sierra Front/Northwest Nevada Resource Advisory Council in 2009. Mike is married to Lou Ann Speulda-Drews. They have three grown sons, a daughter at UNR, and five grandchildren.
Trustee: Jacquelyn Leuener
Jacquelyn L. Leuener is a seasoned marketing director and paralegal with over 11 years of experience with estate and tax planning law firm of Anderson, Dorn & Rader, Ltd. She is a horse woman and competitive athlete. She has a unique background and a clear perspective for creating effective marketing, branding, and advertising strategies for businesses. Jacquelyn earned her B.A. in Communications & Journalism from Saint Mary’s College of California She attended on a soccer scholarship, played tennis, and was an Editor of the school paper. She also lived abroad and studied art history, language, and European history in Madrid, Spain. Jacquelyn also implements her marketing acumen and passion for horses with her company called JackpotEquine.com.
